Esports map handicaps move fastest
A roster change announced on a Tuesday can reprice a match by twenty points. No other sport lets the participants change this much between fixtures.
Every other sport in this product has stable participants. A football club is recognisably the same club from one week to the next, and a model fitted on its results is fitted on something continuous. Esports is not like that, and the market prices the difference.
Two sources of discontinuity
The first is roster movement. A five-player team that replaces two players is not the previous team with a small adjustment; it is substantially a new team with the same name, and every result before the change is evidence about somebody else.
The second has no analogue anywhere else: the game itself changes. A patch can weaken a strategy a team is built around, and the team that was second in the world on Monday is mid-table on Thursday without anybody playing badly.
What that does to a map handicap
In a best of three, -1.5 maps requires a clean sweep, which is a demanding
ask against any competent opponent. The handicap board is therefore very
sensitive to the true strength gap, in the same amplifying way that
a tennis point model amplifies serve.
Combine that sensitivity with participants who can change between fixtures and you get the most volatile handicap market on any board. Prices move twenty points on news that in football would be a footnote.
Where the market is slower than it looks
Books price esports with less liquidity and fewer traders than football, and the models behind them lean harder on recent results, which is exactly the data a roster change invalidates. That combination is why esports lines move so far so fast when they move at all: there is less money holding them still.
What this does not tell you
Volatility is not opportunity. A market that moves twenty points is a market where being wrong costs twenty points, and the fact that historical data is weak applies to any model reading it, including this one.
