The draw fixes every player's possible route before anybody hits a ball. Two players of similar strength can deserve different outright prices when one route contains stronger opponents earlier than the other.
Reading a quarter rather than a match
An outright price combines a sequence of match probabilities, and because the scoring system compounds small edges, a slightly easier path compounds too. A seed who avoids every big server until the semi-final is worth meaningfully more than the identical seed who meets one in round three.
A useful draw audit therefore counts credible threats in each section and asks when they could be met. The official Wimbledon draw provides the route; player strength estimates determine how demanding that route is.
What grass does to the inputs
Grass is generally fast and low-bouncing, but surface does not move every player in the same direction. Published point-level analysis finds different serve, rally-length and bounce patterns across clay, grass and hard courts. A player's surface adjustment should come from those interactions, not from a single label such as "big server".
The ITF also classifies court pace directly, so two events carrying the same broad surface label need not play identically. The safer input is measured court pace combined with player-specific evidence.
Where first week prices go loose
A first-round score adds information, but it does not isolate form from the opponent, conditions or match-up. The useful comparison is between the updated price and a model that has adjusted those inputs consistently, not between two players' winning margins or time on court alone.
What this does not tell you
Draw analysis says nothing about who is playing well now. It is a statement about paths, and a path is only worth something to a player who is in shape to walk it.
