Bet builder odds explained
Bet builder odds are not the legs multiplied together. Why same-match selections are linked, how bookmakers price that, and where the margin hides.
On this page
Bet builder odds are not the separate prices multiplied together. The legs all come from one match, so they are linked: if a team wins, it has probably scored, and if it has scored, more goals are likely. The bookmaker estimates the chance of every leg happening together, allowing for that link, then adds a margin. The result is usually a shorter price than simple multiplication would give you.
Accumulator first: when multiplying is fair
Two of this morning's Desk calls are in different matches on the same Thursday. We make Gent 43.8% at SC Braga and Lech Poznań 40.6% at home to Sunderland. Those games do not affect each other, so the chance of both is close to the product.
| Leg | Our chance | Fair price |
|---|---|---|
| Gent win at SC Braga | 43.8% | 2.28 |
| Lech Poznań win v Sunderland | 40.6% | 2.46 |
| Both (a double) | 17.8% | 5.63 |
Multiplying chances (0.438 × 0.406) and multiplying fair prices (2.28 × 2.46) give the same answer. That is how accumulator odds work, and the full version is in accumulator odds explained.
Why a bet builder is different
Now pick legs from one match: Gent to win at Braga, plus over 2.5 goals, plus a Gent player to score. These are not independent. If Gent win, it is more likely the game had goals and that their forwards scored. So the chance of all three together is higher than the three chances multiplied.
| Legs from one match | Linked? | Effect on the true joint chance |
|---|---|---|
| Team wins + team scores | Strongly | Much higher than the product |
| Team wins + over 2.5 goals | Moderately | Higher than the product |
| Team wins + opponent keeps a clean sheet | Against each other | Lower; the price should be longer |
If a bookmaker just multiplied the prices, it would pay out far too much on linked legs. So it does not. It runs its own model of how the legs move together, and the bet builder price reflects that.
Where the margin goes
Each single market already has a margin built in. A bet builder stacks several, then adds the bookmaker's correlation adjustment, which you cannot see or check. That is the honest problem with bet builders: you are buying a price whose working is hidden, on legs whose link you are probably estimating by feel. The general cost of a margin is in what the bookmaker's margin really costs you.
How to think about one
Ask the same question as for any bet: what is my chance for the whole combination, and is it higher than the price implies? If you cannot put a number on the joint chance, you cannot know whether the bet builder is fair. A combination that feels likely because every leg sounds likely is exactly where the hidden link does the damage.
What this does not tell you
BAI8 publishes match-result chances, not joint chances for goals or scorers, so we cannot price a bet builder for you. This piece does not say any bet builder is good or bad value. And the more legs you add, the more often it loses, whatever the price.
18+. Bet only what you can afford to lose.
Common questions
How are bet builder odds calculated?
The bookmaker estimates the chance that every leg happens together in the same match, allowing for how the legs are linked, then adds its margin. That is why the price is usually shorter than multiplying the separate prices.
Why are bet builder odds lower than an accumulator?
In an accumulator the legs come from different matches and are close to independent, so multiplying is fair. In a bet builder the legs come from one match and tend to happen together, so the true joint chance is higher than the product, and the price is shorter.
Is a bet builder the same as a same game parlay?
Yes. Bet builder is the usual UK and European name; same game parlay is the American one. Both combine several selections from one match into one bet.
Are bet builders good value?
Usually not. Bookmakers price the link between legs with their own model and add a margin on top, and the margin on combined bets is typically larger than on single markets. You need a view on the joint chance to know.
