Tyrese Haliburton is cleared to play Indiana's opener at New Orleans on Wednesday, his first regular-season game since the Achilles tear in Game 7 of the 2025 Finals. The market has reacted the way markets do to a star's return: it has Indiana as the favourite. Our Desk card goes the other way, New Orleans 59.1%, because one player's return is not the whole roster.
What the reports say
The Pacers' own report from the preseason finale says Haliburton scored 17 points with six assists against Milwaukee, after 24 points in 18 minutes at Oklahoma City. Across three of the four preseason games he averaged 16 points, two rebounds and five assists in 18 minutes. He missed one game with an ankle tweak, which Hoops Nightly logged as cleared on 13 October. In his own words, it had been "a long 16 months".
The same injury report shows the rest of the roster is not at full strength. Johnny Furphy is out for the season with a torn ACL. Aaron Nesmith (hamstring), Jarace Walker and T.J. McConnell are day-to-day after sitting out the finale.
How a return like this gets priced
A star's name moves a price before his minutes are known. Bookmakers and bettors price the player they remember, and Haliburton at his best changes how a whole offence runs. That is reasonable. What is harder to price is the version that turns up in week one: 18-minute preseason stints are not 34 regular-season minutes, and teams usually manage a player's load early in a comeback from a long injury.
So the honest way to read the market's view is: it is pricing a lot of Haliburton. Our card is pricing less of him and more of the gaps around him. The best price we saw on New Orleans was 2.44 at 1xBet against our fair 1.69, an 18.1 point gap. ESPN's matchup predictor makes Indiana 63%. Neither of us has a regular-season minute to check against yet. Why we treat a gap that wide with suspicion is in why a very wide edge makes us look twice.
What could still move the number
- His minutes. If Indiana let him play a full load from night one, the market's view looks better than ours.
- The day-to-day list. Nesmith, Walker and McConnell all playing would make Indiana deeper than our card assumes.
- The final report. NBA teams file injury designations the day before a game, and opening-week prices move hard on them.
What this does not tell you
It does not say Haliburton will struggle, or that Indiana will lose. It does not grade his comeback; three preseason games are a tiny sample. It is a reading of sourced news and how a star's return usually sits in a price, next to a Desk number that disagrees with the market.

Common questions
Is Tyrese Haliburton back for the Pacers?
Yes. He is cleared and expected to play the opener at New Orleans on 21 October, his first regular-season game since tearing his Achilles in Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals.
How did Haliburton look in preseason?
Sharp. The Pacers report he averaged 16 points, two rebounds and five assists in 18 minutes across three preseason games, including 24 points in 18 minutes at Oklahoma City.
Does Haliburton's return make the Pacers favourites against the Pelicans?
The market and ESPN's predictor think so. Our Desk card does not: we give the Pacers 40.9% and New Orleans 59.1%.
Why might the market overrate a returning star?
Because a star's name moves money before his minutes are known. Early in a comeback, playing time is often managed and the supporting cast matters as much as he does.
