Sunderland's injuries are one reason we price Lech Poznań v Sunderland far closer than the bookmakers do, but they are not the whole story. We give Lech 40.6%, the draw 25.6% and Sunderland 33.8%. The best price on Lech was 5.5 at Nordic Bet, which implies about 18%. Our fair price is 2.46, a 22.4 point gap. The injury news explains part of that gap. It does not justify all of it, and we say below where we think the rest could be wrong.

Who is missing and why it matters

Sports Mole listed Daniel Ballard (hamstring), Thomas Meunier (hamstring) and Romaine Mundle (knee) out before Sunday's game, with Wilson Isidor doubtful. Lineups Today carries the same four for Thursday. Ballard and Meunier are both defenders, so Sunderland's back line is the area under most strain.

That showed at Bournemouth on Sunday. Sunderland lost 2–0 and played 73 minutes with ten men after Kevin Danso was sent off on 17 minutes, per Sky Sports. It was their fourth league defeat in a row and left them 19th. Régis Le Bris called it "very painful" and asked for a reaction, per BBC Sport.

What it does to the price

There are two effects, and they pull in different directions.

It weakens the side that travels. A defence without Ballard and Meunier, three days after a heavy loss and a long trip to Poland, is a reason to move some probability from Sunderland towards Lech and the draw. That is part of why our Sunderland number, 33.8%, sits well under what the market implies.

It is less bad than it looks. Danso's red card came in the Premier League, and domestic bans apply to domestic games, so on that card alone he should be available in Europe. The Sunderland Echo also reported Brian Brobbey and Habib Diarra back in training on 16 October. And Sunderland won both of their first two Europa League games, per the same report.

What this does not tell you

It does not tell you how much weight our research gave each absence; the Desk publishes the result, not a line-by-line breakdown. Lech have a list too, centre-back Wojciech Mońka among them, and that is covered in our Lech Poznań v Sunderland prediction and odds. Team news can change before Thursday, and a gap as wide as this one is a reason for more caution, not less.

Common questions

Who is injured for Sunderland against Lech Poznań?

Daniel Ballard (hamstring), Thomas Meunier (hamstring) and Romaine Mundle (knee) are out, and Wilson Isidor is doubtful, per Sports Mole and Lineups Today.

Is Kevin Danso suspended for Lech Poznań v Sunderland?

His red card at Bournemouth was in the Premier League, and domestic bans apply to domestic games, so on that card alone he is available in the Europa League. Check the team sheet.

What is BAI8's number for Lech Poznań v Sunderland?

Lech 40.6%, draw 25.6%, Sunderland 33.8%. The best price we saw on Lech was 5.5 at Nordic Bet against our fair 2.46, a 22.4 point edge.

Does Sunderland's injury list make Lech favourites?

Not on its own. It is one of the reasons our number is closer than the market's, but Lech have injuries of their own and sit 36th on the Europa League table.
