Home advantage in football odds

Home teams win more often and the odds already know it. How big home advantage is, how it enters a price, and why we still make some away sides favourite.

Home advantage in football is real and measurable, and every serious price already includes it. A study of 4,844 games across 15 European leagues found that home teams took 0.39 more points per game than away teams when fans were in the ground. So being at home is worth something, but it is never a reason on its own to back the home side: the odds have counted it already.

How big it is

The best evidence comes from the 2019/20 season, when leagues finished behind closed doors. That gave researchers a clean comparison:

Measure (per game) With fans Without fans
Home points minus away points 0.39 0.22
Home goals minus away goals 0.29 0.15

Source: University of Leeds and Northumbria University study, summarised by the University of Leeds. A separate study of the top European leagues estimated that empty grounds cut the home win probability by 5.4 percentage points, with draws unchanged.

How it shows up in a price

A model starts with the two teams' strength and then adds a home term. Roughly, the home term moves a few percentage points from the away win to the home win. That is why two equal teams are not priced as equals: the home side might be about 45%, the away side about 27%, the rest the draw.

So when a card makes the away team favourite, the strength gap must be large enough to beat that home term. Two of our Sunday cards do that:

Fixture Home Draw Away
Nice v Strasbourg 34.3% 28.0% 37.7%
Crystal Palace v Nottingham Forest 36.9% 29.0% 34.1%

At Nice we make Strasbourg favourite despite the home term; at Palace the home term is roughly what tips it to Palace. The full reasoning sits in Nice v Strasbourg prediction and odds.

Where home advantage varies

It changes with crowd size, travel distance and league. The Dutch study of empty grounds found the home win edge almost vanished, which suggests the crowd is a big part of it. A derby with no travel probably carries less.

What this does not tell you

The 45% and 27% for two equal teams is an illustration, not a BAI8 number. It does not tell you the home term our model uses for any league, and studies from one strange season may not hold for full grounds today.

Common questions

How big is home advantage in football?

In a study of 4,844 European games, home teams won 0.39 more points per game than away teams with fans present. Without fans it fell to 0.22.

Is home advantage already in the odds?

Yes. Bookmakers and models both build it in, so a home side being at home is not by itself a reason to back them.

Why would BAI8 make an away team favourite?

When the gap in team strength is larger than the home edge. On Sunday 11 October we make Strasbourg 37.7% at Nice, against 34.3% for Nice.
