We make the Brooklyn Nets favourites at home to the Charlotte Hornets on opening night: Nets 60.8%, Hornets 39.2%. The best price we saw on Brooklyn was 2.18 at 1xBet, against our fair price of 1.64. That is a 14.9 point positive edge. The number is an estimate, not a promise.

Tip-off is 7:30 pm ET on Wednesday 21 October (23:30 UTC) in Brooklyn, the first regular-season game for both teams.

Our numbers

Outcome Our chance Fair price Best price seen Edge
Brooklyn Nets 60.8% 1.64 2.18, 1xBet +14.9 pts
Charlotte Hornets 39.2% 2.55

The 2.18 was quoted at 05:02 UTC on 18 October. At 2.18 the market gives Brooklyn about 46%, so it sees Charlotte as slight favourites and we see the reverse. A two-way card like this has no draw to absorb probability, which is why the edges on basketball cards look the way they do; the arithmetic is in two-way basketball odds vs three-way football.

What moved the number

  • Charlotte's guards are banged up. Vigged lists six Hornets day-to-day: Coby White (calf), Kon Knueppel (hamstring), Moussa Diabate (elbow), Grayson Allen (knee), Kylan Boswell (knee) and Grant Williams (hamstring). White and Knueppel missed the preseason.
  • A new Charlotte side. Sports Illustrated notes LaMelo Ball, Miles Bridges and Tre Mann have gone, with Naz Reid, Grayson Allen, Royce O'Neale and Dennis Schröder in. New rotations take time to settle.
  • Brooklyn won the preseason meeting easily. The Nets won 124–90 in Charlotte on 6 October, per Vigged. Preseason scores are mostly noise, so this counts for little on its own.

What could make us wrong

Brooklyn were 20–62 last season, per Sports Illustrated, and other public models like Charlotte here: Statz makes the Hornets 58% and 2.7-point favourites. Day-to-day players often play. If White, Knueppel and Diabate all suit up, most of the reasons for our number go away and the gap is probably too wide. It is wide enough already that we checked the news twice before writing; see why a very wide edge makes us look twice.

What this does not tell you

It does not say Brooklyn will win; on our numbers they lose about four times in ten. It is moneyline only: no spread, no total, no props. The final injury report arrives the day before the game, and opening-night prices move hard on it. The 2.18 is a timestamp. Our other opening-week cards are Pelicans v Pacers and Heat v Timberwolves.
