Over/under 2.5 goals explained
Over 2.5 goals wins with three or more, under with two or fewer. How the line works, how to turn its price into a chance, and why there is never a push.
On this page
Over 2.5 goals wins if a match has three or more goals; under 2.5 wins if it has two or fewer. The half goal is there so the bet can never tie. It is settled on normal time only, so extra time and penalties do not count. That is the whole rule. The hard part is deciding whether the price is fair, and that means turning it into a chance.
How the line settles
| Goals in normal time | Over 2.5 | Under 2.5 |
|---|---|---|
| 0, 1 or 2 | Loses | Wins |
| 3 or more | Wins | Loses |
It does not matter who scores. A 3–0 and a 2–1 both win an over 2.5 bet. A 1–1 loses it, even if both sides hit the post five times. Stoppage time counts; extra time in a cup tie does not, because the bookmaker settles on the 90 minutes plus added time.
Turning the price into a chance
Divide 1 by the decimal price. A price of 2.00 means 50%, 1.80 means 55.6% and 2.50 means 40%. Do it for both sides and add them up. The total will be over 100%, and the excess is the bookmaker's margin. How much that margin costs over a season is in what the bookmaker's margin really costs you.
| Decimal price | Implied chance |
|---|---|
| 1.60 | 62.5% |
| 1.80 | 55.6% |
| 2.00 | 50.0% |
| 2.20 | 45.5% |
| 2.50 | 40.0% |
Then the only question that matters: is your own chance of three or more goals higher than the implied one? If it is not, the price is not worth taking, however likely the goals feel. That is the same test we run on every match-result card, set out in what a positive edge actually means.
What moves the line
Goals markets react to the same news as match markets, but not always in the same direction. A missing striker can lower the goals line without moving the match price much. A red card raises the chance of goals for the side with eleven, which is why live totals jump, as we explain in what a red card does to a live price. A recent run of high-scoring games is a description of the past. It only matters if the reasons behind it will still be on the pitch.
Quarter lines: 2.25 and 2.75
A 2.25 line splits the stake: half on 2.0 and half on 2.5. With exactly two goals, the 2.0 half is returned and the 2.5 half loses on an over bet. A 2.75 line is half on 2.5 and half on 3.0. These are Asian totals, cousins of the handicaps in Asian handicaps without the jargon.
What this does not tell you
BAI8 Desk cards today price match result only, so this piece gives no BAI8 chance for any goals line. It explains how the market works, not whether any given total is a good price.

Common questions
What does over 2.5 goals mean?
The bet wins if the match has three or more goals in normal time. Under 2.5 wins with two goals or fewer. Extra time and penalties do not count.
Can an over/under 2.5 bet be a push?
No. Goals come in whole numbers, so a half-goal line always has a winner. Pushes only happen on whole-number lines such as 2.0 or 3.0.
How do I turn an over/under price into a probability?
Divide 1 by the decimal price. A price of 2.00 implies 50%. Add the two sides together and the amount over 100% is the bookmaker's margin.
What is a 2.25 or 2.75 goal line?
An Asian total. Your stake is split across the two lines either side, so 2.25 is half on 2.0 and half on 2.5.
