An Asian goal line is an over/under bet on a line that can be a whole or a quarter number. On a whole line like 2.0, exactly two goals gives you your stake back. On a quarter line like 2.25, your stake is split in half across the two nearest lines, 2.0 and 2.5, so one score can half win or half lose the bet. That is the whole idea: the quarter lines let you pay for protection at exactly the score you are worried about.

How each line settles

Over bets, one unit staked, settled on normal time.

Goals Over 2.0 Over 2.25 Over 2.5 Over 2.75 Over 3.0
0 or 1 Lose Lose Lose Lose Lose
2 Refund Half refund, half lose Lose Lose Lose
3 Win Win Win Half win, half refund Refund
4 or more Win Win Win Win Win

Under bets are the mirror image. Under 2.25 wins outright on 0 or 1 goals, half wins on 2, and loses on 3 or more.

Worked through with Tuesday's scores

Tuesday's Desk calls gave a spread of totals. These are their full-time scores, and what each over line would have done.

Match Score Goals Over 2.25 Over 2.75
Stuttgart v Atlético Madrid 1–1 2 Half refund, half lose Lose
Harrogate Town v Bury 3–1 4 Win Win
Wolves v Portsmouth 1–1 2 Half refund, half lose Lose
Porto v PSV Eindhoven 0–1 1 Lose Lose
Paris Saint-Germain v Barcelona 4–2 6 Win Win

Scores are from the sources in Tuesday's 13 calls. A 1–1 is where the quarter line earns its keep: over 2.25 gets half the stake back, over 2.5 loses all of it.

The arithmetic of a split stake

Take 10 units on over 2.25 at a price of 2.00, a round number used here only to show the sum. Five units go on over 2.0 and five on over 2.5.

  • Three goals: both halves win. Return 20, profit 10.
  • Two goals: the 2.0 half is refunded (5 back), the 2.5 half loses. Return 5, loss 5.
  • One goal: both halves lose. Loss 10.

The price on over 2.25 sits between the over 2.0 and over 2.5 prices, because it is a blend of the two. The same split logic runs through the handicap version in Asian handicaps without the jargon, and the plain line is in over/under 2.5 goals explained.

How to judge the price

Turn each half into a chance and ask whether you think the line is right. For over 2.25, what matters is your chance of three or more goals and your chance of exactly two. If you think two goals is very likely, the refund half is worth a lot to you, and a quarter line may suit you better than 2.5. If you think the match is all or nothing, it is worth little.

What this does not tell you

BAI8 does not publish goal-line calls today, so this piece gives no BAI8 chance for any total. The 2.00 price above is a teaching number, not a market price. Settlement rules on extra time and abandoned matches vary by bookmaker, so check yours.

Common questions

What is an Asian goal line?

It is an over/under goals bet on a line that can be a whole number or a quarter, such as 2.0, 2.25 or 2.75. Whole lines can be refunded; quarter lines split your stake across the two nearest lines.

How does over 2.25 goals work?

Half your stake goes on over 2.0 and half on over 2.5. Three or more goals wins both halves. Exactly two goals refunds the 2.0 half and loses the 2.5 half. One or none loses both.

How does over 2.75 goals work?

Half your stake goes on over 2.5 and half on over 3.0. Four or more goals wins both halves. Exactly three goals wins the 2.5 half and refunds the 3.0 half.

Why bet an Asian goal line instead of over 2.5?

Because it lets you choose how much protection you want at the edge of the line, and the price changes to match. You give up some return in exchange for a refund or half refund on the score you fear most.
