What a back-to-back does to an NBA price
Teams average 14.2 back-to-backs in the 2026-27 NBA season. What the second night of a pair does to a price, and what to check before you trust a line.
On this page
A back-to-back makes the team on its second night a little weaker, and the schedule is public months in advance, so most of that is already in the price by the time you see it. The part the market prices less well is who sits. A star rested on the second night moves a line far more than tired legs do, and that news often comes late. That is the gap worth watching, not the fixture list itself.
The 2026-27 schedule in numbers
| Measure | 2026-27 | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Average back-to-backs per team | 14.2 | NBA.com |
| Most for any team | 16 (Celtics, Mavericks, Pelicans) | NBA.com, NBC Sports |
| Fewest | 12 (including the Nuggets) | NBC Sports |
| Back-to-backs with 750+ miles of travel | 59, down from 74 | NBA.com |
| Back-to-backs ending in a national TV game | 47, down from 66 | NBC Sports |
NBC Sports notes the Pelicans have two back-to-backs in their first five games, and that the Nuggets do not play one until 29–30 November.
What the second night changes
- Rest decisions. The biggest single effect. A team may sit a star or limit his minutes, and a line built on the full roster is then wrong by a lot. NBC Sports points out that a second night ending in a national TV game is when stars are more likely to play, which is why that number is tracked.
- Travel. A road-to-road pair with a long flight is harder than two home nights. The 59 long-travel pairs are the ones to circle.
- Pace and totals. Tired legs can change how a game is played as much as who wins it, which is why the totals market is worth a look; we cover that in NBA totals and the pace trap.
What a basketball card looks like on our Desk
Our basketball cards are two-way: no draw, two chances that add to 100%. This is tonight's EuroLeague card, the format any NBA card will use.
| Outcome | Our chance | Fair price | Best price seen | Edge |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ASVEL | 44.6% | 2.24 | ||
| Crvena Zvezda | 55.4% | 1.81 | 1.80, 1xBet | −0.2 pts |
When we price an NBA game on a second night, the rest news is one of the inputs that has to be settled before the number means anything. Why a two-way edge reads differently from football is in two-way basketball odds vs three-way football.
What this does not tell you
It does not tell you how many points a back-to-back is worth; that varies by team, roster and travel, and we do not publish a rule of thumb we cannot source. It also does not cover the EuroLeague, where the schedule works differently. The season starts soon; judge the second-night effect on the injury report, not the calendar.

Common questions
What is a back-to-back in the NBA?
Two games on consecutive nights. The second night is the one that matters for a price, because legs, travel and rest decisions all land on it.
How many back-to-backs are there in the 2026-27 NBA season?
Teams average 14.2, the lowest since the NBA Cup began, and no team plays more than 16, according to NBA.com.
Does the market already price back-to-backs?
Mostly, yes. The schedule is public months ahead. What it prices less well is late news on who rests, which often arrives close to tip-off.
