Braga changed coach on Tuesday: what it does tonight
Braga sacked Carlos Vicens two days before hosting Gent. Our 43.8% on Gent was set before that. What a coach change does, and does not do, to the price.
On this page
Braga sacked Carlos Vicens on Tuesday 20 October and hired Franclim Carvalho the same day, two days before tonight's Conference League game against Gent. Our number on that game does not include the change: we make Gent 43.8%, the draw 29.3% and Braga 27.0%, and those chances were published on 18 October. Since then the best price on Gent has gone from 5.0 to 4.2. So the honest answer is that the coach change has moved the market's story more than it has moved ours, and we do not know yet which of the two is right.
What happened at Braga
Braga ended Vicens's spell "with immediate effect" after a third straight defeat, the 2–1 home loss to Gil Vicente on Monday, per SAPO. A Bola reports Carvalho signed until the end of the 2026/27 season, and Correio do Minho says he took his first session on Tuesday afternoon. That leaves him two training sessions before a European home game.
The run that cost Vicens is real. Sports Mole counts four games without a win, four goals in the last six matches, and a 3–0 defeat in Copenhagen on matchday one. zerozero expects Carvalho to keep the back three for now, with little time to change more, and two forwards who could not play on Monday (Jovan Milošević and Tommy Marqués) are now eligible.
What it does to the price
Here is our card next to how the best price on Gent has moved.
| Quoted (UTC) | Best price on Gent | Our chance | Edge |
|---|---|---|---|
| 19 Oct, 01:54 | 5.00, Coolbet | 43.8% | +23.8 pts |
| 21 Oct, 04:00 | 5.25, Coolbet | 43.8% | +24.7 pts |
| 22 Oct, 04:32 | 4.20, Coolbet | 43.8% | +20.0 pts |
The 5.25 came the morning after the sacking, so the first reaction did not make Braga shorter. The drop to 4.2 came overnight into match day. Most other bookmakers were already near 4.2 to 4.4 on Monday, so part of that move is one outlier price falling back to the pack, not news. Our chance stays put while the price moves, for the reasons in why our chance stays put when the price moves.
Why we did not change the number
A new coach is a known unknown. It can sharpen a team for a game or two, or change nothing, and two training sessions is very little time to change how a side plays. We have no measured effect of our own for a first European game under a new coach, so adding one by hand would be a guess dressed as a number. The research that set 43.8% weighed Braga's short injury list, Gent's missing top scorer Josué Vergara and a draw near 30%; none of that has changed. The full card is in SC Braga v Gent prediction and odds.
What could make us wrong
The pre-sacking Braga is the one we priced. If the change lifts them, or if it costs them shape in a first game, our number has neither. Braga's home record in Europe is also strong: Sports Mole counts 13 wins in their last 15 European home games. A 20 point gap is wide enough that we would rather doubt it than defend it, which is the point of why a very wide edge makes us look twice.
What this does not tell you
It does not tell you how good Carvalho is, or how Braga will line up; team sheets come about an hour before kick-off (19:00 UTC). It does not say Gent will win: on our own numbers they fail to win more than five times in ten. It covers the match-result market only, and the 4.2 is one bookmaker's quote at one moment.
18+. Bet only what you can afford to lose.
