Line shopping explained with this week's prices

Line shopping means taking the best price on offer, not the first one. What it is worth, shown with this week's real Desk prices, and where it stops helping.

Line shopping means checking the price for the same bet at several bookmakers and taking the best one. The bet does not change; only what it pays does. It is the one edge every bettor can get without forecasting anything better than the market. This week shows why: the best price on each of the six live BAI8 Desk cards sits at a different bookmaker.

Six cards, six bookmakers

These are the best prices on the Desk this morning, all quoted between 04:32 and 05:03 UTC on 22 October.

Card Pick Best price Bookmaker
SC Braga v Gent Gent 4.20 Coolbet
Lech Poznań v Sunderland Lech Poznań 4.80 Nordic Bet
Arizona v Iowa State Arizona 1.95 BoyleSports
Northern Illinois v Hawaii Northern Illinois 2.68 Courtside
Getafe v FC Lugano Lugano 4.36 1xBet
Samsunspor v Amed SK Amed SK 2.33 betPARX

Anyone with one account would have had the best price on at most one of these. That is not a sign the other five bookmakers were wrong; prices differ for reasons covered in sharp and soft bookmakers: why prices differ.

What the difference is worth

Take the Gent card. Our chance is 43.8% whatever the price. Over three days the best price moved from 5.0 to 5.25 and then to 4.2, all at Coolbet, and on Monday OddStorm showed most other bookmakers near 4.2 to 4.4.

Price taken Return on a 10 stake if Gent win Edge on our chance
5.25 (21 Oct) 52.50 +24.7 pts
5.00 (19 Oct) 50.00 +23.8 pts
4.30 (typical other bookmaker, 19 Oct) 43.00 +20.5 pts
4.20 (22 Oct) 42.00 +20.0 pts

Same game, same chance, and a win at 5.25 pays a quarter more than a win at 4.2. One bet barely notices that. Hundreds of bets at a slightly worse price each time is how a sound approach turns into a losing one, which is why it sits next to staking in staking without going broke.

Where it stops helping

  • Outliers bite back. A price far from every other bookmaker is often a mistake or a slow update. It can be cancelled, limited, or gone before you click. We explain how we treat those in why one bookmaker's price is not the market.
  • Availability. Not every bookmaker takes customers in every country, and the Desk's best price may be at one you cannot use.
  • It does not fix a bad bet. Taking 5.25 on a team that should be 6.0 is still a bad bet, just a less bad one.

What this does not tell you

It does not say any of these prices is still available or that any pick will win; prices move all day, and each row is one quote at one moment. The returns above are simple arithmetic, not a forecast, and the 4.30 is a typical figure from OddStorm's comparison on 19 October, not a quote we recorded.

18+. Bet only what you can afford to lose.

Common questions

What is line shopping in betting?

Comparing the price for the same bet across bookmakers and taking the best one. The bet is identical; only the payout changes.

How much is line shopping worth?

On one bet, the difference between two prices. Over many bets it adds up: on this week's Gent card, 5.25 instead of 4.2 pays 25% more on every win, at the same chance.

Why does the BAI8 Desk show one bookmaker's price?

Each card shows the best price it found across the bookmakers it compares, with the time it was quoted. That price can move or vanish, and it may not be available where you live.

Is the best price always the right one to take?

Not always. A price far from every other bookmaker can be a mistake or a stale quote that gets cancelled or limited, so treat an outlier with care.
