Sharp and soft bookmakers: why prices differ
Some bookmakers set prices and others follow them. What sharp and soft mean, why the best price on a match is often at a smaller book, and what that tells you.
On this page
Bookmakers do not all set their own prices. A few, usually called sharp, take big bets from professionals, run low margins and move quickly on what those bets tell them. Many more, called soft, aim at recreational customers, carry higher margins and often follow the market rather than lead it. That is why the same match shows different prices across bookmakers, and why the single best price is often an outlier at a smaller book. An outlier can be an opportunity or a mistake, and you cannot tell which from the price alone.
The two kinds, side by side
| Sharp bookmaker | Soft bookmaker | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it serves | Large and professional bettors | Recreational customers |
| Margin | Low | Higher |
| How it sets prices | Moves on informed money | Often follows other books |
| Winning customers | Accepted, at a lower price | Often limited |
| Where the best price shows up | Rarely the outlier | Often the outlier |
These are tendencies, not labels on a licence. Most bookmakers sit somewhere between the two, and a book can be sharp on one sport and soft on another.
What this week's Desk shows
BAI8 compares our chance with prices at 72 bookmakers and quotes the best one. This week's six cards found their best price at five different books.

No single bookmaker is always best, which is the argument of why one bookmaker's price is not the market. The best price is a fact about one book at one time, which is why every card carries a timestamp, as explained in why we timestamp every Desk quote.
Why an outlier deserves suspicion
When one book is well above the rest, there are three common reasons: it is slow to react to news, it is pricing generously to win customers, or it has made an error. Only the second is a lasting opportunity, and it often comes with low stake limits. When our chance agrees with an outlier and disagrees with everyone else, we treat that as a reason to check our own work, the habit described in why a very wide edge makes us look twice.
What it means for reading a price
A sharp book's price is the better guide to the true chance; a soft book's best price is the better guide to what you could be paid. Comparing the two is how you find whether a price is generous or just out of date. The gap between our fair price and the best price is set out in fair price vs best price on a BAI8 card.
What this does not tell you
We do not label any named bookmaker sharp or soft here: that changes by sport, market and season, and we have no public source that measures it. This piece also does not tell you whether a given price is still available; prices move and limits apply.

Common questions
What is a sharp bookmaker?
A bookmaker that takes large bets, including from professional bettors, keeps a low margin and moves its prices quickly on what those bets tell it. Its prices tend to be close to the eventual market consensus.
What is a soft bookmaker?
A bookmaker aimed mainly at recreational customers. It usually has a higher margin, often follows other books' prices, and may limit accounts that win consistently.
Why are the best odds often at a smaller bookmaker?
Because a book that follows the market can be slow to move, or may price a match generously to attract customers. That creates outliers, and an outlier is what a best-price search finds.
Is the best price always a good bet?
No. A price that is far from every other bookmaker can be stale or wrong, and it may not be available for long or for a large stake.
