Nick Bosa is not expected to play for the 49ers in Seattle on Sunday. He did not practise on Wednesday or Thursday with knee and calf injuries. A missing star pass rusher usually lengthens a team's price, and the market has the 49ers as clear outsiders. Our number still leans San Francisco at 52.2%.

What the reports say

  • Official report. The Seahawks' Week 5 injury report lists Bosa as a non-participant on both Wednesday and Thursday (knee, calf).
  • Expected status. NBC Sports Bay Area says he isn't expected to play and that he has not played since Week 2. He was seen working on a side field on Thursday.
  • Timeline. Kyle Shanahan told KNBR: "I don't think he's far from playing", adding the team would love him back before the bye, three games away, "but still too early to tell."
  • Some cover. 49ers Webzone reports Mykel Williams should be ready to return from his ACL recovery this week.

We do not know Friday's final designation yet. Treat the above as the state of public reporting on Thursday, not a confirmed inactive list.

How a pass rusher's absence moves a price

A quarterback injury moves an NFL line the most. An elite edge rusher moves it less, but not by nothing: fewer sacks and pressures give the other quarterback more time. The market usually prices that in as soon as the news is credible, which for Bosa was weeks ago. That matters. News that is three games old is probably already in the price.

Where our number sits

Side Our chance Fair price Best price seen Edge
Seattle Seahawks 47.8% 2.09
San Francisco 49ers 52.2% 1.91 2.56, Betfair +13.2 pts

The full preview is in Seahawks v 49ers prediction: our chances. A 13.2 point gap is large. If our research underweights how thin the 49ers' defensive line is without Bosa, Sigle and Thompson, that is the most likely reason we are wrong.

What this does not tell you

It does not tell you how much Bosa alone is worth in points; nobody can isolate that cleanly. It does not confirm he is out until the inactives come in. And it does not say the 49ers will win.

Common questions

Is Nick Bosa playing against the Seahawks?

Public reports say he is not expected to. He did not practise on Wednesday or Thursday with knee and calf injuries, and NBC Sports Bay Area says he is not expected to play on Sunday.

When could Nick Bosa return?

Kyle Shanahan told KNBR he hopes Bosa is back before the 49ers' Week 8 bye, three games away, but said it was too early to tell.

Does BAI8 still lean 49ers without Bosa?

Yes. Our card gives San Francisco 52.2% against Seattle, and the best price we saw was 2.56, a 13.2 point edge.
