European handicap betting explained
A European handicap gives one side a whole-goal start and keeps the draw as a bet you can back. How it settles, how it differs from Asian, and a real example.
On this page
A European handicap is the ordinary three-way football market with a whole-goal start given to one team. You add the handicap to the final score and settle on the new result: home, draw or away. The draw stays a bet you can back, so there is never a refund. If Braga are −1 against Gent, a 2–0 Braga win is a Braga handicap win, a 1–0 Braga win is the handicap draw, and anything else is a Gent +1 win.
How it settles, line by line
Take a −1 handicap on the home side. The same match, three possible bets:
| Real score | Home −1 | Handicap draw | Away +1 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home wins by 2 or more | Wins | Loses | Loses |
| Home wins by exactly 1 | Loses | Wins | Loses |
| Draw | Loses | Loses | Wins |
| Away wins | Loses | Loses | Wins |
A −2 handicap moves everything one goal along: the home side must win by three or more, and a two-goal win is the handicap draw. Betano's help pages use exactly that worked example.
How it differs from an Asian handicap
An Asian handicap uses halves and quarters, which removes the draw, and a whole-goal Asian line refunds your stake when the margin lands exactly on it. A European line does not refund. The exact-margin result is its own outcome, priced on its own, and your stake loses if you backed either side. Pinnacle's guide is a good reference on the Asian side.
That is the trade. The European version gives you a third price to back, but it also means two of the three bets lose on the exact margin.
A real example from the Desk
Our card for SC Braga v Gent on Thursday has Gent 43.8%, the draw 29.3% and Braga 27.0%. Gent +1 wins on a Gent win or a draw, so on our numbers it lands 43.8% + 29.3% = 73.1% of the time, a fair price of 1.37. That is the same chance as Gent in a double chance bet. What our three-way number cannot tell you is how the remaining 27.0% splits between a one-goal Braga win (the handicap draw) and a bigger one. That needs a goal-margin model, not a match-result one.
What this does not tell you
It does not say a European handicap is better or worse value than the plain result; that depends on the price, the same as any bet. Bookmakers can carry a bigger margin on handicap lines than on the main market, so compare the implied chances before you assume a handicap is a cheaper way in. And our Desk publishes match-result numbers, not handicap ones, so the example above is arithmetic on our three-way chances, not a separate BAI8 call.

Common questions
What is a European handicap in betting?
It is the three-way match result with a whole-goal start added to one team. You can back the favourite, the underdog or the handicap draw, and there is no refund: one of the three always wins.
How does a European handicap of -1 work?
The team on -1 must win by two or more goals for the bet to win. A one-goal win makes the handicap draw the winning bet, and a draw or a loss makes the other team's +1 the winner.
What is the difference between European and Asian handicaps?
A European handicap uses whole goals and keeps the draw as a third outcome, so a stake can lose on a result an Asian line would refund. Asian lines use halves and quarters to remove the draw.
Is a European handicap +1 the same as double chance?
The bet wins on the same results, a win or a draw for the team on +1. The difference is that the handicap market also offers a separate price on the exact one-goal defeat.
