The Desk has two NBA calls for the first week of the season, both on Wednesday 21 October. Miami at home to Minnesota has the wider gap, 10.2 points on the Heat. Atlanta away at Orlando is 9.0 points on the Hawks. Both are estimates, not promises, and both quotes are four days old.

The two cards

Game (21 Oct, ET) Our pick Our chance Fair price Best price seen Edge
Timberwolves at Heat, 7:30 pm Miami Heat 63.1% 1.58 1.89, Pinnacle +10.2 pts
Hawks at Magic, 7:00 pm Atlanta Hawks 51.5% 1.94 2.35, 1xBet +9.0 pts

Both best prices were quoted at about 04:17 UTC on 17 October.

Both sides of each game

Game Home Away
Miami Heat v Minnesota Timberwolves 63.1% 36.9%
Orlando Magic v Atlanta Hawks 48.5% 51.5%

Basketball has no draw, so each row adds to 100%. Why that makes a basketball edge look different from a football one is in two-way basketball odds vs three-way football.

Heat v Timberwolves

Minnesota open without Donte DiVincenzo, out with an Achilles injury until around April per ESPN. Miami's worry is Bam Adebayo's groin. The full card and the risks are in Heat v Timberwolves prediction and odds.

Magic v Hawks

We make this close to a coin flip with Atlanta slightly ahead: 51.5% to 48.5%. The market priced the Hawks at 2.35, which implies about 42.6%, so the gap is in how much the market favours the home side. SI lists Atlanta without Henri Veesaar (ACL, out for the season) and Mouhamed Gueye (foot). NBA.com has tip-off at 7:00 pm ET at the Kia Center. A small away favourite on our numbers still loses almost half the time, and the opening week of a season has no current-season data behind it.

What this does not tell you

It does not say either side will win. On our numbers Miami lose about 37 times in 100 and Atlanta about 48. These are moneyline cards only, with no spread or total, and the quotes are timestamps, not live offers. Opening night injury reports can change both cards before tip-off.
