What a 4,000-mile trip does to Hawaii's price

Hawaii fly about 4,000 miles and five time zones to play Northern Illinois. Why travel is part of our 55.5% on the Huskies, and how little it proves.

Travel is one of the main reasons we make winless Northern Illinois favourites over Hawaii on Saturday. Hawaii fly about 4,000 miles to DeKalb, across five time zones, and have lost all three road games this season by an average of 15 points. We give Northern Illinois 55.5% and Hawaii 44.5%, while the market makes Hawaii 4.5-point favourites. The trip explains part of that gap. It does not explain all of it, and three road games are a thin base to lean on.

The trip in numbers

Detail
Distance About 4,000 miles (SuperWest Sports)
Time difference Five hours: Hawaii is UTC−10, Illinois is UTC−5 in October
Kick-off 19:30 UTC, 2:30 p.m. in DeKalb, 9:30 a.m. on a Honolulu body clock
Hawaii at home 1–3, 15.3 scored, 20.3 conceded a game
Hawaii away 0–3, 16.3 scored, 31.3 conceded a game
Northern Illinois at home 0–2, 15.5 scored, 28.0 conceded a game

Home and away splits are from StatsNext. Hawaii score about the same wherever they play; what changes on the road is how much they concede, 11 points a game more. That is the shape you would expect from a team that tires late, though it is also what three tough opponents would produce.

What it does to our number

Our card on this game:

Outcome Our chance Fair price Best price seen Edge
Northern Illinois Huskies 55.5% 1.80 2.68, Courtside +18.2 pts
Hawaii Rainbow Warriors 44.5% 2.25

The 2.68 was quoted at 04:36 UTC on 22 October. At that price the bookmaker gives Northern Illinois about 37%. Two weak teams on neutral ground would sit near 50–50; we have the home side about five points above that and the market has them about 13 below. Travel, home form and a morning body clock for the visitors are the reasons we moved towards the Huskies. The full preview is in Northern Illinois v Hawaii prediction and odds.

The same logic, fatigue and schedule pushing a price, is behind what a back-to-back does to an NBA price.

Why we hold it loosely

Hawaii's road games include strong opponents, so their away splits mix travel with quality. Every Hawaii team makes long trips every season, so players and staff are used to it in a way a mainland team would not be. And the market has heard all of this too: the 4.5-point spread is set by people who know where Honolulu is. If our travel effect is too big, the edge shrinks quickly.

What this does not tell you

It does not measure jet lag, and it does not say Hawaii will lose; on our numbers they win about 45 times in 100. It covers the moneyline only. The splits are from seven games in total, a sample far too small to prove a travel effect on its own. It is a reason, not a law.

18+. Bet only what you can afford to lose.
